Can Playing Video Games Make You Smarter?

Playing video games can actually change the brain, sometimes for the better. Scientists have found that video games can make certain brain regions bigger and more efficient. For example, one study discovered that “the parts of the brain responsible for attention … function more efficiently in gamers, as they need less activation to remain concentrated on demanding tasks” (UOC.) This means that people who play video games regularly may get better at tasks that need focus, like paying attention, reacting quickly, or solving puzzles. Also, brain-scanning studies show that gaming can help improve visual skills, memory, and how fast your brain processes information.

But video games don’t always make the brain stronger,  it depends a lot on how much you play and what kind of games you play. Some kids in a big study who played video games many hours a week scored a bit better on memory and “response inhibition” tasks (which help you control impulses) than kids who didn’t play. At the same time, that same study noted that those kids had slightly higher scores for attention problems and other behavior-related issues. So like many things, video games can be good for the brain, especially if you play in moderation and choose games that challenge your thinking.
