Did you know that the woolly mammoth might de-extinct? A private biotechnology and genetic engineering company, by the name Colossal Biosciences, is working on reviving the woolly mammoth. Scientists are doing this complex organism reproduction because they believe that if the mammoths were brought back, those mammoths would help to put a stop to dangerous global warming, eventually restoring the Arctic lands. Let's get more into the details. Scientists believe that if the mammoths were restored back to life, they could protect the Arctic from killing the Earth. The Arctic floors (permafrost) are trapping greenhouse gasses. As a result, if the ground starts to melt, the gasses will be released. This could lead to worse global warming. The experts' solution was that if the mammoth were revived, it could help stomp on the permafrost and compact more snow on top of the gases to stop them from being exposed to the air (Colossal Biosciences).

Why can't humans do this job?

Environmental Impact: Heavy vehicles rely on fossil fuels which would generate significant air pollution. This contradicts the goal of protecting the Arctic environment and could cause further harm to the ecosystem.

Economic Cost: The scale of the ARtic is vast, spanning millions of square feet. Launching a project of this magnitude would require an enormous amount of vehicles, costing billions of dollars just for the machinery.

Logistical Challenges: The project would require 24/7 supervision over a massive landscape. Finding a big enough number of people would be hard and since this project would take many years it would be too difficult to follow through with.(Colossal Bioscience & Lake Forest College)

Looking at the pros and cons, do you think the scientific rewards are worth the environmental risks?
