The Multi-Million Dollar Tuna
Jan 11, 2026

Toyosu Market in Tokyo is the world’s largest fish market, and is known for the global seafood prices and handled seafood. The new world record was made for the highest price ever paid for a fish worth of $3.2 million. A bluefin tuna that weighed 535 pounds was sold at the Toyosu Market. The fish was caught in northern Japan, which produces some of the best bluefin in the world.
The owner of a sushi chain won the huge fish in the first auction of the year. He said “He hoped to pay a bit less, but the bidding escalated quickly.” “Hundreds of tuna are sold daily at the early morning auction, but prices are significantly higher than usual for the Oma tuna, especially at the celebratory New Year auction” (AP NEWS). This was why the biddings were increasing so rapidly. Bluefin were once threatened by overfishing, but now seem to have recovered. This is because of the significant conservation efforts.
