Flooding in Vietnam

Imagine, waking up just to see your whole house and neighborhood filled and drowned with water. That’s what the people of Vietnam experience at least four to six times per year. With October being the most dangerous month, including landside, typhoons, flooding and heavy storms.The area with the most floods is in Central Vietnam. Over hundreds of people have gone missing and killed. As stated, “One government report noted that at least 22,000 homes have been flooded from weekend’s heavy rains ”(The Times, Vietnam). In one area, more than six feet of rain has been recorded over the past year.

Residents are carrying food after a heavy rain in Vietnam in October. By helping each other, they are able to survive.
Another major storm was on October 10, 2024. Hundreds to thousands of homes were submerged in water or destroyed. A news agency recorded 111 people dead and 22 missing. “The president of Vietnam’s Red Cross Society says the floods are some of the worst the nation has seen in decades”(CNN 10). Unfortunately, 40% of Vietnam’s labor force works in agriculture, however, with the constant flooding, coffee production has been on pause.

With some areas, daily rainfall is up to 500mm. Nguyen Thi Thuy, a resident says,“This is the first time I’ve experienced such a flood, surpassing even the historic one in 1964, I heard”(Gobal News). Roads and railways have been damaged and demolished.The heavy and harsh storm has caused a food storage, power shut down and many of the residents' belongings were destroyed. Including walls, cracked and crushed.
