Months of meticulous preparation, late coding sessions, and hundreds of practice runs had led to this moment. We arrived at the LEGO Robotics competition with our robots tuned to perfection and our spirits high. Everything was going according to plan until we unrolled the mat. We realized the map LEGO had sent us for practice was not the one on the competition floor. The coordinates were off, the mission triggers had shifted, and our months of code were suddenly obsolete. Most teams would have folded under that kind of pressure, but this is where the club truly blew me away. There was no finger-pointing or defeatism. Instead, they put their brains together in a way I had never seen before. Students who usually worked in silos were suddenly acting as one coordinated team. As their coach, I stood back in genuine awe. I have never been more proud of a group of students. Though the students were stressed and nervous, the results themselves made the day. They didn't get a perfect 12 out of 12, but they achieved something much harder: they succeeded in the face of a total system failure. Ultimately, those 9 missions completed under duress are worth more than 12 missions completed with the right map. They didn't just learn to build a LEGO robot; they learned to survive an engineering crisis. Engineering is rarely about getting it right the first time; it’s about how fast you can fail and fix it. And on Sunday May 17, 2026; Carmenita Robotics proved that while the wrong map might lead you astray, the right mindset will always get you to the finish line.
