In 2025, Australia became the first country in the world to ban young people under the age of 16 from using major social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Snapchat, Reddit, and Twitch. The government said they did this to try to protect kids from problems such as cyberbullying, addiction, and harmful content online. If these companies don’t block under-16s, they could be fined millions of dollars. This new law started on December 10, 2025, and already millions of teen accounts were removed or locked out of their accounts. People all over the world started talking about the ban, and some other countries are thinking about doing something similar.

Many teens and tech companies are unhappy about the ban. Some teens are trying to find ways around it by using fake ages, selfies, or VPNs. Arlo, a teenager affected by the ban, said, “Nothing has changed for me, I am still able to post what I want, still able to see what I want” (ABC News). Other critics worry that the ban might isolate young people or push them to unregulated internet spaces where they might still face risks. Still, supporters think the ban could help kids spend more time offline and grow up with better mental health. The debate shows how governments are trying to figure out how to keep kids safe while also letting them use technology.
